Those of us who live in or near Gibsons, and who are blessed with a view of the ocean, know of the spectacular vistas that change and present each and every day. No two views are alike. In fact, it’s always a surprise to visit someone’s home nearby your own. Separated by perhaps only a house or two, their panorama can be a surprise to even a longtime resident of the area. Each home has its very own perspective on the world, simply because of its living room window. That said, most homes have their showcase view framed by other homes, docks, roads, light posts and other indicators of the community we live in. They have to look past those distractions to enjoy their bay window theater. Very few homes look out to only water, mountains, islands and sky. Even many of the prestigious homes on “The Bluff” can’t make that claim. Most look over our fine little coastal community and the marvels of Howe Sound and the North Shore Mountains. Just north of Gibsons though is a length of beachfront property that affords such a pristine view. Homes and cottages on those properties enjoy the unfettered spectacle that is Howe Sound. From any vantage point on their properties they can see only the greens of the forests of Keats, Bowen and Gambier Islands. The North Shore Mountains are omnipresent with their seasonal moods always dictating the emotion of the Sound. And the waters provide an accurate reflection of the sky of the day. The only man-made interruption may be a fishing boat, sailboat or outrigger canoe plying the waters of Shoal Channel. Eagles, otters, seals and gulls are the actors on stage at any given time. It”s so easy to forget that a bustling community is only at your back when you are on these shores. And so it is, that Joy and I often visit the summer cottage of Chris and Phyllie Robb just outside the Town boundaries of Gibsons. Each year coming from Alberta to enjoy their long time family cottage, they can forget not only their worldly problems; they can also forget that they are surrounded by people. It’s easy to slow one”s pace, to put things in perspective and to refocus simply by drinking in THE VIEW FROM THE ROBB COTTAGE.
